Immediately after the elections, the opposition parties announced their disagreement with the conduct of the voting process and have called for mass protests. Demirchian, himself, has said that he would appeal to the Constitutional Court for annulment of results. President Saparmurad Niyazov escaped an assassination attempt on his life on November 25, 2002. Gunfire was fired on his motorcade, but the president did not notice it until he was informed about it at his palace.
