Updated reports indicate that six Russian peacekeepers were killed in a road accident in Abkhazia\'s Gali district, aide to the Russian Ground Forces commander Col. Igor Konashenkov told Interfax on Saturday. \"An armored personnel carrier moving toward the Kodori Gorge in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone for engineering reconnaissance on Saturday overturned near Gali, killing six servicemen from the Russian peacekeeping contingent,\" Konashenkov said.

Among the victims are four officers, one non-commissioned officer, and a contract soldier, he said. \"Several servicemen on board the APC sustained injuries, but their lives are out of danger,\" Konashenkov said. \"Several possible reasons behind the accident are being pursued, among them a sudden mechanical fault and the appearance of an unexpected obstacle on the road,\" Konashenkov said.
