KYRGYZ VILLAGERS 'DETAIN' NINE POLICEMEN

Residents of the village of Kara-Suu in Djalalabad Oblast on 6 September detained nine policemen in an attempt to force the authorities to release seven people taken into custody in connection with a protest meeting in Kerben in June, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reported. On 7 September, several hundred people demonstrated in Kara-Suu to demand the release of the seven detainees. Meanwhile, some 400 people left Tash-Komur on 6 September on a protest march to Bishkek, and reached Razan-Sai the following day.

On 7 September, several hundred people demonstrated in Kara-Suu to demand the release of the seven detainees. Meanwhile, some 400 people left Tash-Komur on 6 September on a protest march to Bishkek, and reached Razan-Sai the following day. The marchers are demanding the resignation of President Akaev and the punishment of those responsible for endorsing the use of firearms against demonstrators in Aksy Raion on 17-18 March. (RFE/RL)
