AZERBAIJANI INTELLIGENTSIA OFFERS TO MEDIATE DIALOGUE BETWEEN AUTHORITIES, OPPOSITION

Amal, an organization that represents the Azerbaijani intelligentsia, released a statement on 1 December calling for a dialogue between the Azerbaijani authorities and the political parties Amal considers the \"true\" opposition. Those parties are Musavat, the progressive and conservative wings of the divided Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, and the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan. Amal expressed readiness to mediate in such a dialogue.

Amal expressed readiness to mediate in such a dialogue. The organization also called on the Azerbaijani authorities to release the approximately 100 persons detained in connection with the post-election unrest, to end reprisals against opposition parties, and to implement all recommendations by the OSCE\'s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights on promoting democratization.
