BACKGROUND: Although China's brutal suppression of the Tibetans garners a great deal of international attention, outbreaks of Uyghur violent protest against the government have made Xinjiang more of a worrisome political flash point to the government than either Taiwan or Tibet. The execution of Uyghurs for "separatist" activities have been numerous since February 1997 when huge protests broke out in Ili, near the Kazakhstan border and turned violent. At least ten possibly as many as 300 were killed.

BACKGROUND: The postings were made to the Centrasia.ru site and signed Usman Khaknazarov, political analyst. The name is unknown to local observers and several analysts, together with the banned opposition party Erk, believe that this is a pseudonym for a senior government official.

BACKGROUND: Unlike the transitioning countries in Eastern Europe, the Central Asian states have no history of independence. The landlocked countries have been pawns of different empires for centuries. They were first ruled by various khanates, then were caught in the 19th century "Great Game" struggle of empires between Britain and Russia, then were controlled by Tsarist Russia before being subsumed by the Soviet Union.
