INDIA’S INTENSIFIED INTEREST IN TAJIKISTAN DRIVEN BY PURSUIT OF AIRBASE AND URANIUM

Indian President Pratibha Patil’s three-day visit to Tajikistan, ending on September 9, was largely ignored by international media. Arriving in Dushanbe at the second part of a two-nation tour of Russia and Tajikistan, Patil said India was interested in developing broader cooperation with Tajikistan to ensure regional, energy, and food security.

DISMISSAL OF GEORGIAN ECONOMY MINISTER SUGGESTS TROUBLED ECONOMIC POLICY

In another reshuffle of the Georgian cabinet, the Minister of Economy, Lasha Zhvania, was dismissed on August 21 and replaced by the 32-year-old Georgian Ambassador to Spain, Zurab Pololikashvilili. President Saakashvili declared that the decision was completely up to Prime Minister Nika Gilauri, but it is inconceivable that such a decision would not have been agreed with Saakashvili. As a reflection of the continuous changes in the government, Pololikashvili, a person with close ties with the banking sector, will be the third Economy Minister since the end of the 2008 August war.
