Georgian officials claimed on 11 August that some 100-120 Russian and Abkhaz servicemen illegally crossed the Russian-Georgian border earlier that day via the Marukhi Pass from Karachaevo-Cherkessia into Abkhazia and are building fortifications 35-40 kilometers from the closest Georgian settlement. The Atsgara River valley runs southeast from Marukhi into the Kodori Gorge.
