RABBANI READY FOR NEGOTIATED AFGHAN TRUCE

Afghanistan's deposed president Burhanuddin Rabbani says his anti-Taleban alliance is ready to stop fighting to help ease the country's humanitarian crisis, but he would not agree to a unilateral ceasefire.He made the remarks during a meeting with the visiting U.N.
Afghanistan's deposed president Burhanuddin Rabbani says his anti-Taleban alliance is ready to stop fighting to help ease the country's humanitarian crisis, but he would not agree to a unilateral ceasefire.He made the remarks during a meeting with the visiting U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Ruud Lubbers. The meeting took place at the headquarters of the opposition alliance in northeastern Badakhshan province. Mr. Lubbers is seeking a truce of 6-12 months to allow more international aid to reach thousands of anguished Afghan refugees. Mr. Rabbani said he believes the fighting should stop for all time, because the people are suffering. But he ruled out any one-sided truce. (VOA)
